Atari 1040STe

The STE was Atari's answer to the Amiga 500. At that time, more and more

games took advantage of the Amiga specialities and therefore gamers

preferred the Amiga. The STE was still compatible to the old ST series and

was equipped with four joystick ports, a 4096 colour palette, stereo sound

and hardware scrolling. Although these enhancements were fine for games the

programmers didn't use them to keep their programs compatible with older

ST computers. The extra features were also not good enough to make ST users

buy the new machine.

The STE was not everywhere marketed as a game machine: in Germany, where the

ST was more considered as a business machine, it was sold as a music computer.
