Tomb Raider

Lara Croft debuted and became one of the most famous female video game icons since Ms. Pac-Man. The game was not expected to sell as well as it did. Although the game was more known for its female main character, the gameplay was not bad. The success of Tomb Raider lead to more female main characters. However, almost all of them were stereotypes showing large breasts. Tomb Raider and the following episodes became system sellers for the videogame industry - Sony made a deal with Eidos later to make sure that Tomb Raider would appear on the PlayStation first. Eidos rushed out a new Tomb Raider title almost every year - a sloppy gamedesign, bad reviews and declining sales were the result. Today, the series has lost much of its glory but back then, there were Tomb Raider toys, magazines, music video clips and later two live action movies with Angelina Jolie.
